Pan Birmingham Cancer Network 2005 Peer Review
What is Cancer Peer Review?
Peer Review is a method of assessing the quality of services, first used for cancer services in hospitals in England in 2001. Its aim is to improve care for people with cancer and their families by:
- ensuring cancer services are as safe as possible
- improving the quality and effectiveness of care
- improving the patient and carer experience
- undertaking independant fair reviews of services
- providing development and learning for all involved
- enouraging the sharing of good practice.
Peer review teams consist of users of cancer services, the carers of users of cancer services and health professionals involved in providing similar cancer services to those which they are reviewing.
How does the process actually work?
Each hospital and cancer network self assesses against the measures in the Manual for Cancer Services (2004). A peer review team then visits each organisation to review each cancer service in the way that patients are assessed, diagnosed and treated.
Equally important is how the patient feels about the experience, how they were treated as an individual, what information and support was available and how easy it was to contact staff when they had a question to ask. All of these aspects are reviewed.
